South African Valour class boosts navy's capability

The four frigates of the Valour class represent not just a rejuvenation of the South African Navy (SAN) but also a shift in the country's strategic focus. From an essentially coastal navy — albeit one able to support special operations over long distances — the SAN is the de facto sub-Saharan naval powerhouse and is set to become a major actor in regional security operations. It is the Valours that make this possible, restoring the 'blue water' and regional capability lost with the last Type 12 frigate decommissioned in 1985. Their range of more than 8,000 n miles and their 28-day endurance will enable the SAN to complement other African navies effectively.
