Irving and Vancouver yards win contracts to rebuild Canada's naval and coastguard fleets

After years of half-hearted attempts, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) is seeking to revive its aging fleet with a CAD33 billion (USD32 billion) procurement effort -the country's largest - which could see 30 major vessels built in as many years.Unveiled in 2010, Canada's National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) lays the framework for the manufacture of new surface combatants, icebreakers and logistics vessels in addition to a variety of smaller craft.On 19 October 2011 Ottawa announced the award of major contracts to two shipbuilders: Irving Shipbuilding, which owns Halifax Shipyards in Nova Scotia on the east coast, and Vancouver Shipyards, of North Vancouver, British Columbia, on the west coast.
