In late October, NATO carried out the naval leg of its 'Noble Justification' exercise series off the coast of Spain. The aim of the exercise was to certify the maritime component of the NATO Response Force (NRF) in readiness for operational availability in 2015. Speaking to IHS Jane's from his flagship, the Galicia-class landing platform dock (LPD) vessel SPS Castilla, Vice Admiral Juan Rodriguez Garat - commander of the naval exercise, and leading the NRF maritime component from January 2015 - said: "High readiness, collective defence, Article 5 [of the NATO treaty] - all those new developments are being included in this 'Noble Justification' [exercise]."
