The US Navy (USN) is moving ahead with plans to acquire an Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (XLUUV) that would be capable of long-range transits before loitering in an area of operations and deploying multiple different payloads. In a request for information (RfI) released on 6 September, the US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), on behalf of the Unmanned Maritime Systems Program Office (PMS 406) in the Program Executive Office Littoral Combat Ship (PEO LCS), said the navy "is taking an accelerated approach with industry to leverage existing, unmanned undersea vehicle designs that can be modified to rapidly bring additional capabilities to the undersea domain". A competitive acquisition approach is planned.
