With the recent USD5 billion contract award to General Dynamics' Electric Boat unit (GDEB) towards the development of the Columbia-class next-generation nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), the US Navy (USN) remains on track to start constructing the vessels in fiscal year (FY) 2021. However, the lack of guaranteed full-funding still threatens the programme and overall USN shipbuilding plans.
