Subsurface overhaul: India's submarine modernisation inches forward

On 14 December 2017, the Indian Navy (IN) commissioned into service the first of its new Scorpene type diesel-electric submarines (SSKs), INS Kalvari. The submarine's arrival came, almost to the day, on the 50th anniversary of the IN's first submarine - a Soviet Union-built Foxtrot-class (Project 641) boat, also named Kalvari - which entered into service on 8 December 1967.
