The UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has been funded to further mature a novel low-cost sea mine disposal concept known as Pulse Dart, it announced in July.Unlike conventional mine disposal systems, which rely on an explosive charge to effect a sympathetic detonation, Pulse Dart imparts an electrical pulse to initiate the ordnance.Mine disposal has traditionally used charges placed adjacent to the mine by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), or an expendable neutraliser vehicle fitted with a shaped charge warhead. However, the safety and security protocols associated with storing and handling explosives on ships impose significant cost and time penalties.In contrast, Pulse Dart contains no explosives, which makes handling and storage less risky. Delivered underwater by an ROV, Pulse Dart comprises a metal spike and tube. The spike penetrates the hard outer shell of the ordnance, where an electrical charge is applied to initiate the ordnance with the operative a safe distance away.
