Unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) are unique among uninhabited platforms in that, although studies regularly laud their potential for reconnaissance and offensive roles like their airborne and underwater cousins, UGVs are the only ones being seriously considered for the logistics support role. Indeed, there are firm plans to introduce large and small systems in the role under the United States' Future Combat Systems (FCS) programme. The UK is mulling its own requirements for small UGVs capable of keeping up with dismounted soldiers, helping to shoulder their increasing burdens in the field.
