Europe's military and civil aviation authorities are reviewing a new industrial and regulatory plan to certify military unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to fly through commercial airspace as early as 2013, writes Brooks Tigner.rnThe air-insertion capability will enable long-endurance UAVs to deploy safely across Europe's skies for expeditionary purposes.rnConsultative stakeholders include NATO, national defence and interior ministries, international civil-aviation authorities and Eurocontrol (the pan-European air-navigation authority). However, the plan's success will depend on development of more than a dozen critical technologies and an investment of hundreds of millions of euros.
