Commissioned into the French Navy on 10 June 2011, the Horizon-class air-defence frigate Chevalier Paul was just days later deployed to the coast of Libya, as part of Operation 'Harmattan' (the French contribution to coalition operations in support of UN Security Council Resolution 1973). This early baptism of fire meant the ship took responsibility for the air defence of the Task Force 473 (centred on the carrier Charles de Gaulle, the multimission amphibious vessel Mistral and their respective air groups) and air control.
