US Navy selects next-generation network service provider

A team led by Hewlett Packard (HP) has been selected to operate the US Navy's (USN's) Next Generation Enterprise Network (NGEN), as both the navy and US Marine Corps (USMC) look to take greater command and control (C2) of IT services after a decade of relinquishing authority. Under the terms of the contract awarded in late June, the HP-led team, which includes AT&T, IBM, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman, will provide the navy with both enterprise and transport services for about 800,000 USN users, 400,000 workstations, and 2,500 locations across the United States, Japan, and Hawaii. "The bottom line is we got what we aimed for. We arrived at a contract award which ensures that we... hold onto the security that we've got inside of NMCI [Navy Marine Corps Intranet], but have the ability to not just pace the security requirements, but we're looking to address let's just call it the future threat when it comes to cyber in a rapid fashion," Sean Stackley, assistant secretary of the navy for research, development and acquisition, said during a 27 June briefing at the Pentagon. After more than 10 years under NMCI, the USN is looking for NGEN to provide affordability, the ability to bring innovation to the system - to enhance the system as technology is improved - for greater C2 of the network, and the opportunity to continuously compete in future, Stackley said.
