Peruvian police achieve success with capture of Shining Path rebel leader after gun battle

Jose florindo flores (alias 'Comrade Artemio'), the head of the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso: SL) faction operating in the Upper Huallaga Valley, was captured in a badly wounded condition, Peruvian Minister of Defence Alberto Otarola announced on 12 February. The 47-year-old Artemio was injured on 9 February following a clash with the national police in the Tocache province of the northern department of San Martin, and captured by security forces on 12 February. According to Otarola, Artemio is currently in hospital having almost lost his right arm.According to local reports, the wounded Artemio was found in a small house close to the river Mishollo. He was transferred first to a local police station and then to the Peruvian capital, Lima, where he remains as a patient at the central police hospital. President Ollanta Humala travelled on 12 February to the Tocache province and urged Artemio's remaining supporters to surrender their weapons, guaranteeing their rights would be respected.
