A group of Islamist militants engaged in gun battles with police in the Chechen capital Grozny on 4 December. Chechen leader Ramzan Kady-rov stated on 5 December that 11 militants and 14 police officers had been killed in the exchanges, which continued for six hours at an empty school and at the Press House, a building housing national and regional media outlets, which later burned down. According to Russian media, the militants came from the town of Shalazi, approximately 50 kilometres (km) from Grozny.
