Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his resignation on 4 November, claiming that he had been warned of an assassination plot against him. Hariri made the statement from Saudi Arabia, apparently surprising the Lebanese government. Reuters subsequently reported a claim by the Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that Hariri had received "Western [intelligence] warnings" of the assassination plan, citing "unnamed sources close to Hariri". Saad Hariri's father, Rafik - a former Lebanese prime minister - was killed in a car bombing in 2005.
