Dutch company Royal Boon Edam International is running three pilot projects involving its automated departure gates at airports in Europe and North America. Bart van der Steen, business development manager, explained that although the gates work according to airport requirements, much remains to be determined regarding passenger behaviour. "Furthermore, regulations vary between countries and continents in the way that passengers need to be spoken to before they use the gates," he told Jane's.
