Overview of Safety Countermeasures for Wrong-Way Driving Crashes

A survey questionnaire and an investigation of 10 real-world case studies were used in this research as a means to overview current practices of safety countermeasures for WWD. The results of this study identified engineering countermeasures (with 91.7 percent) as the priority choice to mitigate these kinds of issues currently becoming adopted by transportation agencies. As the effectiveness of the countermeasures is a driving factor in implementing the treatment, geometric modifications are found to be more successful than other countermeasures and completely eliminate (100 percent reduction) the possibility of driving the wrong way. This fact justifies why exit ramps are found to be the highest priority according to the survey questionnaire. Accordingly, signs are the second most effective countermeasures. When it comes to cost, pavement markings are the least expensive improvements; however, their application at problematic locations shows promising outcomes, with a 40.0 percent decrease in frequency of wrong-way incidents according to NTTA. Lastly, while only one-third of participating agencies claim to deploy ITS technologies, HCTRA had a successful experience, authenticating the use of these devices.
