The power of prequalification in the AWS D.1.1 Structural Welding Code for Steel

Economy is an important factor in the construction business. This is usually provided by maximizing efficiency in fabrication by eliminating waste and redundancy that does not add value to the final product. The AWS D1.1 Code acknowledges this by providing the concept of Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) prequalification. This set of rules allows fabricators to prepare a written production welding procedure without having to qualify it by costly mechanical and nondestructive testing.
