On the morning of 9 October, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck Kashmir in the border area between Pakistan and India. Tens of thousands of people were killed; millions more were injured or made homeless. In remote, mountainous areas, it was reported that entire villages had been destroyed, while the tremors were felt as far away as Delhi and Kabul. It is said to have been Pakistan's worst natural disaster.
