Categorizing research

I have a small suggestion to get away from the "dichotomy" so much deprecated in "Research Reconsidered" (Issues, Winter 2000-01) and in Lewis Branscomb's "The False Dichotomy: Scientific Creativity and Utility" (Issues, Fall 1999). It occurred to me at a conference Roger Revelle assembled in Sausalito about 30 years ago when he was vice president for research at the University of California. 1 mention it occasionally, it has not caught on, but I try once again.
