New ISO/IEC standard will help to fight counterfeiting of driving licences

A recently published ISO/IEC standard will help fight the growing problem of counterfeit or illicitly altered driving licences. At the same time, it will allow a single document to serve both as a domestic driving permit or licence (DDP or DDL) and an international driving permit (IDP) - thus helping to solve one of the problems caused for licensing authorities and travellers alike by today's trend towards mass travel. ISO/IEC 18013, Information technology - Personal identification -ISO-compliant driving licence - Part 1: Physical characteristics and basic data set, establishes guidelines for the design format and data content of a driving licence compatible with the relevant ISO standards for both visual human-readable features and machine-readable technologies, like a magnetic stripe, integrated circuit with contacts, contactless integrated circuit and optical memory technology. It also allows for emerging technologies such as biometrics and additional security elements, thereby improving the accuracy of the information the document contains.
