As a result of globalization, International Standards now play a key role in trade facilitation. Although developing countries realize that for them to meet the challenges of a larger and more efficient market, they need to develop and supply value-added competitive products to the world market, they face many standardization-related challenges. Developing countries include a large group of countries with diverse levels of development. Thus the standardization-related challenges are many and varied. However, key amongst them is the need to effectively participate in international standardization activities, and to adopt and implement International Standards. Many developing countries do not participate sufficiently in international standardization work and related activities and, as a result, do not optimally exploit the benefits that standardization offers, such as enhancing the competitiveness of products both on the domestic and international markets, strengthening the ability to implement trade obligations, technology transfer, consumer and environmental protection, etc. Thus developing countries lag behind developed countries who are increasingly devoting more and more financial and human resources to the development and implementation of International Standards.
