Easily Retrieve Spooled File Lists

IBM provides a rich set of APIs for use with System i tasks. A particular subset of this API set includes the various list APIs, which-as their name suggests-return lists of various object types into user space objects. Launching into a lengthy explanation of user space objects would distract me from my main point, so my discussion of them will be quite brief. If you know little about how user spaces and list APIs can work together, you can find detailed information in IBM's Information Center (publib.boulder.ibm.com/ infocenter/iseries/v5r4/topic/apiref/listUserSpace.htm).rnMy goal is to introduce a flexible utility, based on the List Spooled Files (QUSLSPL) API, for retrieving a list of spooled files, then returning them to your program one by one-much as if you were sequentially reading a file. In a future article, I'll use this utility as the foundation for creating a Work with Spooled Files display that lets you define your own spooled file options, in addition to the ones that IBM's standard display provides.
