摘要

This essay demonstrates the importance of the refugee across several decades in the work of documentary filmmaker Johan van der Keuken. It argues that the filmmaker's work attempts to integrate historical-materialist approaches with experiential and personalized approaches. By doing so, the filmmaker works against the normative conventions of the refugee as passive victim.
