RCC arch dams - an affordable solution?

For many years arch dams have not been considered a feasible solution fo: dam construction in many countries around the world, partially due to the lack of local expertise in the required complex construction procedures, the absence of properly trained design and construction engineers, the high cost of cement, cooling technologies and formwork, and also due to the widely propagated idea that arch dams require an extremely good quality of rock foundation. There is major potential for hydropower development in Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is worth pointing out that most of the worlds poor or developing countries are located in these three continents. Moreover, a vast portion of rainforests, natural reserves and biodiversity are also found here. Dams for irrigation, flood control and drinkable water systems are also needed in those poor or developing countries. One of the key challenges for the construction of new dams is to select a type of dam with affordable costs and the minimum environmental impacts. This paper deals with the idea of how RCC arch dams fit perfectly into these requirements.
