The Pyhasalmi mine, located in an underground mine complex in Finland, is the deepest base metal mine in Europe, reaching a depth of 1400m. The mine offers unique opportunities for pumped storage hydropower technology due to the existing mine infrastructure and the very high head. In using the depleted mine, rather than virgin land, the environmental impact of the project is significantly reduced. Although pumped storage has been in operations across Europe for hundreds of years, the Pyhasalmi Energy Storage project is the first in Finland to fully utilise the technology.
