If the US Society on Dams was granted three wishes for its industry - what would they be?

Wish #1 - EDUCATE is one of USSD's four strategic imperatives. USSD wishes to improve the public's understanding of the value of dams and the benefits they provide. Quite often dams are viewed in an unfavourable light in relation to fish habitat and the environment. Dams create habitat and sustain life in many ways, including providing water during long periods of drought to irrigate crops, by controlling flooding caused by heavy rains, by providing drinking water to local communities, by creating a navigational river system that provides for bulk freight transfer at low cost, by creating recreational opportunities, and by generating power for industrial and residential use. Dams continue to power the U.S. economy in many different ways. We should never underestimate or take for granted the dams that we pass-by on our way to work or school each day. The value that dams provide is difficult to describe in just a few words, but the impact of dams is everywhere we go.
