The Mediterranean island state of Malta wishes to strengthen its role as a maritime nation. The Malta Maritime Authority is intended to further this aim. Alongside the traditional port of La Valetta, it is chiefly Marsaxlokk, the new container terminal, which is rapidly gaining in importance. With about 480,000 containers (TEU) being processed each year it has now reached the limits of its capacity and is to be extended at a cost of more than US$ 200 million.%Die Europäische Union (EU) entdeckt den Mittelmeerraum.
