The Americas for the Americans was already a motto with which one of the predecessors of the current US president made history. The Monroe Doctrine, first formulated by James Monroe in 1823, considered Latin America to be the USA's natural backyard, where the still-young nation could establish its credentials as a major political and economic power. Today there is talk of a wall with which the world's sole remaining superpower wants to close itself off from its southern neighbour. One of the aims is to encourage US companies to locate their manufacturing plants inside the national borders. Dissenting firms might face sanctions.
