Four years ago, Timo Glave, Martin Joerss and Steve Saxon of the consultancy McKinsey summarised the result of container standardisation by stating that "most shipping companies offer all of their customers the same or similar services, regardless of their clients' requirements. Shipping lines are failing to charge for value-added services, for instance for intermodal solutions or guaranteed delivery times, and are unable to monetise innovations".
