The EU attaches a high priority to making transport safer and more environment-friendly. At the opening of the conference, EU commissioner Violeta Bulc quoted some disturbing figures, however. 25,000 people are killed and 137,000 are injured in road accidents every year in the European Union. This results in costs of approximately EUR 100 million per year to the economy, equal to roughly one percent of the ELTs gross domestic product. Austria compares relatively well with other countries, with 49 road deaths per million inhabitants in 2017, representing a fall of 11% in relation to the previous year. In fact the percentage of fatal accidents involving trucks is relatively small. "The proportion accounted for by trucks was 6% last year, remaining stable, while the volume of HGV traffic is on the increase, after all," Bulc told the ITJ in Vienna.
