At the beginning of 2021 Poland and Czechia were amongst those countries with the highest Covid-19 infection rates worldwide, in relation to their total populations. Since March 2020 knee-jerk reactions have included travel restrictions with direct impacts on air travel in general and on air cargo volumes in particular. Some of the region's airports were also able to grow strongly, however. A small player was the biggest winner amongst the airports of Central and Eastern Europe, in terms of airfreight volumes. According to ACI Europe, an airports association, BTS, the gateway that serves the Slovak capital of Bratislava, handled about one fifth more airfreight in 2020, vis-a-vis the figure for 2019.
