Business drivers for smaller airports

It is not easy for smaller airports to compete against their larger counterparts. Their market is vir- tually restricted to economy airlines, which would like to have a refund for every single passenger, the express parcel services or, as here, the charter airlines. They simply could not survive on incoming and outgoing services provided by the major airlines. At the recent EuroCargo 2004 held in Cologne (Germany) (see also page 52), Stephan Blank, Eastern Air Cargo, Leipzig, Russi Batli-wala, Chapman Freeborn Airmarketing, Frankfurt/ Main, and ITJ editor-in-chief, Ursula Schmeling discussed the role of the charter broker for smaller airports. Blank pointed out that they are not only good for pretty pictures in trade journals such as the ITJ.
