FedEx boosts activities in Vienna and Budapest

The world's largest freight airline FedEx will begin to land four times a week with an A310 full-freighter at the airports in Vienna (Austria) and Budapest (Hungary) from 27 October. This will provide swift new connections for shipments to the east coast of the USA via the express service provider's European hub at Paris CDG airport (France). The new scheduled FedEx service can transport a 40 t payload and flies the Paris-Vienna-Budapest-Vienna-Paris loop. FedEx aircraft stay parked at Budapest's Ferihegy airport during the day, and always start the return leg to Paris via Vienna in the evening. At present, the US express service provider offers a daily flight to Vienna with a significantly smaller ATP turboprop full-freighter, which is only able to carry a 7 t payload. From the Viennese point of view, the arrival and departure times are interesting. According to the schedule, the machine from Paris should land at 05.45. This is outside the night flying ban which has been in place at Vienna airport since 2007. Only 3,000 aircraft movements (1,500 night flights) p.a. are permitted between 23.30 and 05.30. The reason for this is the ongoing mediation process for the construction of a third runway, which is still in the planning phase. The new transatlantic capacities from the Europe hub Paris CDG to the US airports in New York NY and Newark NJ (see ITJ 37-38/2008, page 59) are behind the increase in FedEx activities in Central and Eastern Europe.
