A new intermodal terminal in the Danube inland waterway port of Vienna Freudenau started operations recently. The new WienCont terminal can handle 500,000 teu a year and has thus given the port operator a breathing space until the next expansion phase can be ushered in. 《Austria's largest maritime port》 as Walter Edinger, the head of the Danube port, likes to call his operation, handled 325,000 teu last year. The new terminal represents an important milestone for the tri-modal location, particularly as it also ensures a railway link between the Donauufer and the Donaulande railways via the newly built so-called Winterhafenbriicke bridge. The latter was destroyed in the Second World War and has now been re-established as a connection between the new terminal and the Austrian railway operator OBB's large Kledering shunting yard, making it an ideal link between the port and the OBB network. Because Austrian transport policy continues to prioritise the shifting of freight from the roads to the railways, the city of Vienna pre-financed the EUR 122 million port and railway project. The port authority provided the land and financed the new facility's two gantry cranes, worth EUR 6 million.
