SAA makes provisions

South African Airways (SAA) has made provisions for USD 727 million to meet possible outstanding accounts with the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus, according to the airline's recent business report. A dispute has arisen regarding an agreement to purchase fifteen A320s from Airbus. South African Airways had placed a major order for eleven A319s, nine A340-600s and six A340-300s in addition to the A320s in 2002, when the SAA board was still chaired by Andre Viljoen. South African Airways says it cancelled the order for fifteen A320s two years later. Airbus confirmed having received such a document from the carrier but continues to regard the order as legally binding.
