Private enterprise tarring Nigerian roads

Nigeria is investing large amounts of money in the modernisation of the rather run-down transport infrastructure in Africa's most populous nation. But as oil income has declined dramatically, public funds are at a low ebb. Thus the government, in power since the end of March last year, is set to bank more on private enterprise in this field. High-volume traffic routes are set to be financed and operated by private concessionaires, as is already the case with the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge in the country's largest city Lagos. A Lagos-Ibadan express throughway and a second bridge across the river Niger are under construction.
