The history of the Maghreb stretches back thousands of years, all the way into antiquity. The Berber peoples were amongst the first inhabitants of the region, and later they were succeeded by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, who characterised the western North African coastal strip strongly. They created extensive infrastructure that has left traces of some relevance to our industry today, including numerous ports, from around the Straits of Gibraltar along the coast past the Gulf of Tunis all the way to Libya. Today there are still good maritime connections between the countries of the Maghreb, and also to other Mediterranean ports on both of the sea's southern as well as its northern coasts. More recent initiatives include the Moroccan port of Tanger Med (see page 18), a modern hub whose throughput continues to rise.
