Distributed generation (DG) usage is increasing nowadays, specially in the wider sense of microgrids. Itsntechnical impacts and restrictions are still under study, and in several aspects are kept almost untouched. Onenof these aspects is the small-signal stability of distribution systems in the presence of distributednsynchronous generators (DSG). This paper deals with such problem, presenting a comprehensive smallsignalnstability study of a system under the specified conditions. The study considers two types of excitationncontrol for synchronous generators: voltage and power factor. The focus, however, is on the latter, since it isnthe most widely used in distributed generators connected to distribution grids. Thus, a comparative analysisnbetween these two control strategies is performed, allowing the investigation of their effects on the smallsignalnstability of a power distribution system (PDS). This comparative analysis is performed with respect tonthe characteristics of its electromechanical oscillation modes (EOM) under several DG penetration levels.nCopyright # 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
