Successfully controlling Cercospora leaf spot on sugar beet with fungicides in Minnesota and North Dakota, USA

The sugar beet industry is responsible for about $3 billion of economic activity in Minnesota and North Dakota. Sugar beet growers lost $45 million in 1998 because of the devastating foliar disease, Cercospora leaf spot caused by the fungus Cercospora beticola. Collaborative research, funded by growers, was conducted to determine how best to control Cercospora leaf spot with fungicides. Research results were disseminated to growers and other educators and advisors of growers. Growers quickly adopted the research-based recommended practices and successfully controlled Cercospora leaf spot, saving millions of dollars in the process.
