The Australian unit of Chinese agribusiness COFCO Corp which owns Tully Sugar has joined Wilmar and MSF to stop selling sugar through the industry-owned marketing body Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL) from 2017. The move by Tully Sugar Limited comes after Wilmar International and MSF Sugar (owned by Thai sugar giant Mitr Phol) announced they would terminate agreements with QSL. Legislation has historically required that all sugar be sold to QSL, meaning that the company had a monopoly on all Australian sugar exports. This legislation was scrapped in 2006, but until now nothing has come of the change. This will change in 2017.
