Balfour Beatty Rail Projects has developed a new design of fully-supported embedded rail slab track that does not rely on being supported by either sleepers or base plates. It is called Balfour Beatty Embedded Slab Track (BBEST). Operating trials with a 120m-long dual-gauge section were conducted at Medina del Campo, Spain, in 2002. A second section, 160m long, has been in service since October 2003 at Crewe on the line to Kidsgrove and Stoke-on-Trent in Britain. This line was recently electrified to provide a diversionary route off the West Coast Main Line.
