The British government has revealed its strategy for improving the efficiency of the country's railways with the aim of reducing operating costs by up to £1 billion per year without cutting services. Transport secretary Mr Phillip Hammond said franchises will be lengthened with the aim of making them "more flexible and more responsive to the needs of passengers." This means franchises will in future run for around 15 years, starting with West Coast next year and Anglia in 2013.
