Three new European Union (EU) railway research projects, which will form the preliminary work of the future core activities of the Shift~2Rail joint technology initiative, were launched at an event in Brussels on May 7. The European Commission (EC) selected Roll~2Rail, IT~2Rail, and In~2Rail following the first "Mobility for Growth" call of the Horizon 2020 programme. These projects will launch key research activities that will eventually feed into Shift~2Rail. Roll~2Rail aims to develop technologies that will benefit the rolling stock of the future, with the results informing Shift~2Rail Innovation Programme 1. IT~2Rail will look at developing the journey experience by integrating travel services supported by innovative digital technologies and will feed into Innovation Programme 4. In~2Rail covers intelligent mobility management (I~2M), smart infrastructure, and energy management.
