WET PEEL TEST FOR THE EVALUATION OF THICK ADHESIVE TAPES

Details are given of a wet peel test for the evaluation of the adhesion of thick adhesive tapes. With or without pre-treatment, acrylate-based adhesive tapes with thick adhesive layers or foam backing, are shown to exhibit different behaviour with regard to peel strength on PVC, aluminium or glass. Using a wet peel test method, when the adhesive gap is moistened during the peel test, the peel strength decreases spontaneously under defined conditions. The degree of this decrease is determined by the substrate and the pretreatment. The results of tests on glass and aluminium substrates provide reproducible information concerning the adhesive/substrate system under wet conditions in a short-term test, it is claimed.
