Smart Growth Policies: An Evaluation of Programmes and Outcomes

The need to manage growth in the USA is clear. Despite being a large nation, the USA has added 58 million people, equivalent to the population of the UK, since 1990. Moreover, this growth shows little sign of abating. The US Census Bureau has projected that the population of the USA will reach 439 million by 2050, an increase of 133 million from 2009. To accommodate this growth, the state and local government must decide how to influence the location and type of new development and transportation systems, the fiscal costs of infrastructure, and the impacts on farmland and the natural environment.
