RD Instruments (RDI), USA, has announced the sale of a workhorse Doppler velocity log (DVL) to Otronix Systems, Inc., Korea, in support of subsea trenching operations. "In an effort to protect telecommunication cables from damage by bottom fishing trawlers, trenching operators off the coast of Korea and China are required to bury their cables three metres beneath the seabed," explained a spokeswoman for RDI. "Such deep burials make trenching operations more difficult, as the vehicle's advancement is restricted to very slow speeds. A precise understanding of the vehicle's motion is critical at these crawling speeds to ensure thai the trencher is moving as anticipated, and not burying itself in the seafloor."
