This year sees the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Waverider buoy by Datawell. History now identifies that launch as a major step forward for the acquisition of open sea wave data. Right from the start, the Waverider combined undisputed accuracy with ease of use and reliability. Dedicated engineering produced a quality of wave measurement that met the high requirements of researchers at universities and oceanographic institutes. This quality, combined with its small size (a 70-centimetre diameter), long autonomy (one year) and impressive telemetry range (50 kilometres), quickly made the Waverider the wave instrument of choice.
