I left school in 1987 and worked for a shipping agent as an export clerk, which in truth was no more than a photocopying boy. I then joined a Lloyd's of London insurance broker and rapidly progressed to becoming a marine placing broker before seeing the demise of the industry and ending up in the marine claims department. I progressed back up the ladder to running the claims broking division before eventually quitting and putting myself through university to retrain with a BSc in Ocean Science. After a short spell as the deputy president at the Students' Union in Plymouth I entered the offshore seismic industry. This was followed by 'baptism of fire' in the dredging world which eventually led me into the realm of swathe bathymetry, working for CeoAcoustics.
