Hunt for mafia's radioactive waste reveals rare pottery

A Hallin Marine, Singapore, ROV team has discovered and retrieved 2000-year-old artifacts while searching for radioactive waste off the coast of Italy. The team was working for Italian contractorrnGeolab - with the Italian government as the ultimate client - onboard the Mare Oceano as it searched for vessels thought to have been scuttled by the mafia.rnItalian authorities believe that up to 39 vessels carrying toxic or radioactive waste may have been sunk by the mafia since the introduction of tighter environmental legislation in the 1980s made illegal waste disposal a lucrative business for crime groups. Last year the wreck of a vessel with 180 barrels of toxic waste onboard was located 18 miles (29 kilometres) off southern Italy's Calabrian coast.
