Two data buoys developed and deployed by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory as part: of the Western Channel Observatory are providing an unprecedented level of detail to help marine scientists understand how our coastal seas work.rnThe understanding of complex marine ecosystems is necessary to investigate the possible impacts and extent of environmental change. Since the 1980s, the rate of sea surface temperature rise around the UK has been about 0.2 - 0.6℃ per decade (Marine Climate Change Impacts Annual Report 2008) and this warming has been fastest in the English Channel and the southern North Sea. The marine laboratories in Plymouth have sampled stations in the western English Channel with datasets dating back for over a century.
